President Trump has revoked federal protection towards transgender students. The protection allowed them to use bathrooms they were more comfortable with to avoid any incidence of bullying or harassment. The Trump directions were enforced against his education secretary, Mrs. Betsy DeVos.
In a collaborative letter from the Education Department and Justice Department, the top officials rescinded the Obama’s administration directives that schools to allow transgender students to have the freedom to choose bathroom at their own will.
The officials pointed that the order by Obama’s administration was inappropriately devised and rolled out without due regards to the role of the state as well as local school districts in devising education policy.
Immediately the announcement was made, the Attorney General Jeff Sessions was expected to quickly take immediate action, but Betsy DeVos resisted signing off, and she even protested the decision to president Trump. Betsy DeVos mentioned that taking down the transgender order could be uncomfortable and dangerous for the students who were under its protection.
When the Sessions saw that he couldn’t convince Betsy DeVos to agree, he took the matter before the president. Betsy DeVos was summoned to a meeting at the White House where she was advised to stop opposing the directive or resign. And having no choice, she agreed.
According to CNN, Betsy DeVos reminded Trump that during the campaigns, they had made a promise to protect everyone’s rights, students included; hence the draft was against that promise.
Even with this unfortunate turn of events, DeVos directed the office for Civil Rights inside the Education Department to investigate any harassment, bullying or mistreatment towards vulnerable transgender students in schools. And also, individual schools are free to accord transgender students freedom to use bathrooms of their choice.
